A comment then a question:
In AF132, the Philips 109B monitor was reviewed and got 86% I think. It
was said to be widely available but I can't find anyone who sells it
and it appears to be both obselete and no longer available. Any
comments on this?
Do any of you AFB'ers know of a company who sells Philips monitors in
the Scottish Central Belt (preferably in Glasgow)?
If so do they sell the 109B?
Please help as my Microvitec's display has gone a fairly deep purple!

Ok... this is what should happen when you click stop in the above case:
the progress bar window closes, and then a requester pops up saying
"No matching files/directories found". From what you've said above, I
presume it is hanging after the progress bar window closes, and the
main window gets stuck with a busy pointer, right? Does AFCDFind also
hang if you select "About" from the "Project" menu?
I'm wondering if you have any programs installed that patch the standard
intuition requesters? For example: MRQ, ReqAttack, ReqChange, RTPatch,
ARQ, etc, etc. If so, try disabling the patch in question to see if that
helps.

If they're paying for the bandwidth then they should be able to do what they
liked with it. I'd still slow down just as much if I were sending loads of
big emails. I might be backing up my harddrive to somewhere else...

Ohhh, new revelation. port 4 of the 100mbit hub can be connected to a 10mbit
one without slowing the rest of the 100mbit hub down, so all I need is a
dirt cheap 10bit hub/switch and a card to go with it. So now, which can I
buy and get away with?

That's not "knowing", that's inferring. I've posted to this list when I
know we're nowhere near the limit and had the mails fail to appear - that's
just egroups providing their usual high quality service.. :-/
> It would appear that these moderator messages don't get sent to everyone,
eh?
Not recieving them doesn't prove they weren't sent, but even if it did, I
find it hard to believe that egroups' mailer daemon discriminates on an
individual basis.

None of this is anything to do with a single comment by Mash. It's a
reaction to his general behaviour on this list.

You and I obviously have differing opinions on what constitutes
"well-informed comments".

Just because that's all *you* use your Amiga for, doesn't necessarily
mean it's the same for everyone. Some people need the extra space, and
why not buy it if it doesn't cost anymore?

Hi all,
Anybody know of a supplier of reasonably priced SCSI hard drives for my
Power Tower? I've bodged an adaptor for my BPPC SCSI so that I can use an
internal 32x CDROM, and I'd like to add another hard drive to install
Linux. I'm just looking for a bg standard SCSI II, but not wide scsi or
Uwide scsi, as I don't want to try and fudge any more adaptors.

Yes, I'd have to agree. I have a 4.3Gb drive (4Gb actual space due to
hard errors at the 'front' of the drive), and I have only about 650Mb
on it.
I have had HD's for about 4 years now and have shipped the contents of
one HD to another every time I upgraded HD, so it's not for want of
trying to fill it!

So you'd have no objection to receiving spam or being mailbombed from
someone with a cablemodem? Since they're paying for the bandwidth, they
can do what they like with it.

Hi Kevin
Try getting hold of an older version of Photoshop, anything from version
3 should support layers. I managed to get a legal copy of Photoshop 4
for the Mac for 50 plus VAT, as a bundle with a scanner. The latest
versions are about 4-500 though, so shop around a bit. IIRC, Corel Draw
is a drawing package, i.e. vector drawing as opposed to the bitmapped
stuff that P/shop and Photogenics do. Hope that's some help.

I think the program you are after is IRA v1.03. Its a nifty little
disassembler that creates code you can reassemble immediately.
However, unless you are a genius with asm, you won't be doing much
with its output.
(bear in mind that the disassembled code has no comments, labels etc,
and no LVO type names - just JSR's to various values held in various
registers).

I don't have the CD version, but in the original one I can't get AHI
to work. It does'nt output any sound at all if I select it (AHI being
installed correctly btw, since I used it via AmigaAMP, DigiBooster,
WarpSNES, Sid4Amiga etc etc... and its set up to use a Prelude

I guess it was a bug that slipped (or didn't affect everyone), since
the latest patches have never solved that problem.

Hello all, I have just been trying to play this game Uropa2
which I bought in the great spending frenzy and find that
it wont go on my machine. I have the following configuration:
A4000 040/25 (full 18 meg motherboard ram) , Picasso IV
card, DKB 3128 memory board (48 megs ram), 8.6 GIG
IDE hard drive and 4speed CD ROM( AsimCDFS).
The OS is 3.5
I have done the suggested installation off the script, left the
CD in the drive, double clicked, and all that happens is my screen goes
black
and nothing else happens(within 10 minutes).
Hopefully someone can help solve this, as it looks a fun game.
Best wishes

To answer for those who are still wondering, it IS the venerable A600.
This was one of the areas where the "Marketing Dept" from the old

the A600 didn't even get an "introductory press blitz" (at least not
here in the states).
Hoppefully a lesson learned (for Amiga Inc.)

Hello Guys,
I know I should`nt do this, but I really need to say it, Can I say thanks to
Tudor Davis, who`s very kindly offered to help me out with a new 3000.
My 3000 died on monday this week, and there seems to be no way of repairing it.
What can I say, but ....
Tudor rocks.

You could try Paint shop pro. I use it quiet allot and its ok. The
best
thing about it is you usually find a free trial version on Mag cover
disks
so you can get the feel of it B4 you buy. It has most of the features
you
could need, eg Layers etc and Version 6 also has vector graphic support.
Plus It can read / write Amiga Iff files :-)
Hope this helps Ian

Buy the cheapest 10mbit hub you can find - they are all the same - slow :)
Then buy the PCMCIA option from Eyetech or Power
or
find someone who has the CNet CN40BC and use cnet.device from Aminet (which
is basically what Eyetech/Power have done AFAIK)
That's about it

I'm just waiting for the marketing.
Imagine if it was happening in like 1990 - Amiga's were huge and we even had
TV and glossy adverts.
What music would they use for advertising the Boxer?
My choice (and cringeworthy selection from Tudor's Turntables of Tat) would
be:
Joe Boxer - Boxer Beat
or even Eye of The Tiger by Survivor - <vbg> - that almost relevant :)

you'll

It is only =A38 something + VAT; I guess the Amiga Format v3.1 will work

As some of you may (but probably don't ;) know, my mate Chris recently sold
most of his Amiga stuff and went the way of the PC. However, there were
some things he just couldn't find a buyer for. When I was at his house the
other night, he offered a lot of it to me for a fiver. Knowing how skint
he is, I bought it all for a tenner ...
Most of the stuff was just magazine CDs, which will go to a good cause (ie
my local user group), as will the older versions of Wordworth and Turbocalc
that he happened to have lying around. The A1200 motherboard with 3.1 ROMs
and IDE adaptor will also find a home with one of the regulars there. Yes,
that's right, for 10 I also acquired an A1200 m/b with 3.1 ROMs and an IDE
adaptor!
Other things he had, which will make good prizes for the next "Spendathon"
happen to include Genetic Species, T-Zer and Napalm! I'm not sure who is
running the spendathon, as Carl Berry (winner of the last one) is thinking
of holding one too! (to get rid of the crud Eddie sent him ;) Ben has also
offered copies of T-Zer as prizes, so these could either be used as
runner-up prizes or carried over to next month's competition.
So watch this space for more news, and remember, it could be you! ;)
Kev
PS Does anyone know how the user-group discount scheme works? I was
thinking that maybe we could set afb up as a user group, and anyone buying
stuff could say "I'm taking part in the afb spendathon" and get a discount
as well as have a chance of winning prizes! Are you paying attention,
Eyetech and PowerC? :-)

It's still TOO MUCH! I bought Fusion and PCx together for 50 a while ago.
I think this bug fix update should be available for free to people like
me. Maybe AF readers should have to pay, but not people who have already
paid!

Yes, which is why I bought Fusion, and which is why I've pre-ordered and
PAID 120 already for Fusion PPC! Personally I think I should get this
68k upgrade for free! Who do they think they are?? No way am I going to
pay for a Fusion 68k upgrade, even if it is only 8 + VAT + postage,
because I'm waiting for the PPC module which is currently running VERY
late. If they turn around and say I can't have the 68k upgrade for free
but need it to run the PPC module, then I will be VERY, VERY angry ...

Hi,
While strictly not a paint program, Corel Xara 2 is a good structured
drawing package which allows you to import bitmaps and perform image
processing functions (including Photoshop plugins) on them. Output
quality is particularly good and can be optimised for the web, and it's
fast even on a modest PC setup. There's a free 15 day trial on the web
(a 7M download) and the full package weighs in at around 70.
http://www.xara.com
Paint Shop Pro is a cheap image processing proggy. Again you can
use Photoshop plugins and it does use layers. I would describe it as
workmanlike as opposed to freeing creative potential though.

Yep - the "president/chairman" of the User Group has to place the order and
the stuff has to be sent to him/her. That gets the discount - could be a
hassle considering the 'coverage' of afb :(
Spendathon idea is quite cool - remember that Eyetech allowed all afb
members to get stuff at special WOA prices after last years WOA. I got
ImageFX and some other wtuff and saved myself a fortune.

Here's a little tip: If you want to find out info like who registered the
domain (and sometimes therefore hosts it) enter the domain name in one of
these search engines:
http://www.nominet.net/whois.html for co.uk, org.uk, net.uk, ltd.uk and
plc.uk
http://www.internic.net/whois.html for .com, .net, .org & .edu
Oh, Nominet tells us mashman.co.uk was registered by Freenetname so it
isn't expensive at all ;-)
Lovely job

2.0 does not have Datatypes or Crossdos and does not use the new
DOSDrivers (still uses one big mountlist file like 1.3) and does not support
new FFS modes: Intl, Dir Caching.
2.0 does have Arexx, a new Workbench interface, proper FFS support,
more stuff in ROM than RAM.
Personally, you would be better off bypassing 2.0 and go straight for 3.1!

Yes, but sadly it's only an 020 :( It may well be cheaper to upgrade my
1200 instead, but in this case there are certain requirements for it to be
an A500 accelerator...

Does anyone know when this new website is getting launched?

Bah! Maybe I'll not do that then! Unless the companies involved want to
offer afb members a special discount, there's nothing we can do ...

I didn't know that - I wasn't on afb at the time. Well, I don't think I
was, I can't honestly remember! It's that long ago ...

I think we have a serious case of RTFM here. Stefan Stuntz does not
demand that you register. If you are happy to use MUI in its limited
form, then you are free to do so.
As for how much programmers need MUI: the thought of making anything
even half as complex as a web browser without it sends shivers down
my spine. Besides, MUI follows in the Amiga spirit of efficiency.
Using gadtools, every program needs a big chunk of code to build and
font sensitize the GUI, but MUI centralizes this into one neat GUI
engine.

It is indeed, but it comes bundled with Photopaint or Artisan (or something
- it depends on the version). I'm pretty sure it has layers. OEM copies cost

Sorry to ask this age old question but after seeing all this talk of
motherboard revisions and PCMCIA network cards I decided to open my Miggy

the reliability of this board. I am looking to add a network card and an 040
card soon. Does anyone have any experience of this revision?
Any help would be appreciated.

You're in luck, the 1B (same as mine) is one of the `stable' versions.
You may find though, that you will still have to the PCMCIA mod - I
/think/ this effects most revisions...

Hi,
I am about to perform a crime, infact one that might harm the amiga. Yes
thats right i am going to try and obtain full versions of shareware
without paying the licence. But i thourght i would try here as a last
resourt.
The people/products i am about to rip off are FileX (Klaas Hermanns) and
GadToolsBox3 (Tomasz Muszynski), both products i need to program
effectivly, and both programs that are now dead. I have tried web sites,
mail addresses, searches of google and (prev AWD), i can only presume that
both these people have given up on the amiga and not looked back, so the
chances of me registering these products are about zero.
If anyone has uptodate mail address please post them, ((or)).. if someone is
willing to mail me the reg'd versions mail be personaly.

Fair comment. The point I was making though is that Photoshop is one of
the best art packages available on any system. Anything from version 3
onwards are pretty decent, personally I prefer the interface on version
3 to that of 4 or 5. And, as I said, I managed to geta full version
Pshop 4 for about 60. I should imagine that if you were to shop around
for a PC version it should come in at something similar. The original
poster said that he had a budget up to 200. For professional work,
Photoshop is well worth the extra.
Is Foundation DC good then, mostly I bin playing GT 2 on my Censored.
And some Speccy emulated games on my Miggy. Oh and a demo of Quake 3 on
my Mac.
